Pretty complex scenario. I would say it's always nice to reminisce about the "might have beens" and the "what ifs", but count your blessings that in this particular case, perhaps he's not as serious as he first seemed to be. Perhaps he realizes the reality of his own life, and the difficulties surrounding his fantasy of moving closer to you to try and possibly fulfill a relationship?

Maybe it's for the best, and that the short trip down Memory Lane was enough to satisfy the mind.

Unless you really feel he could be the one, and you're thinking rationally, then maybe try sending him another message, and being honest about wanting another opportunity. I don't know his story nor yours, and what that might entail of closing doors and opening new ones, but if you can live with what it was, good, if you need more, state so.
