But I don't feel I have the right so I don't approach. I get all nervous if I try to smile so I tend not to as I'm never comfortable with it.

Never seen a woman smile at me, as I always presume they are smiling at someone else. Only time I feel comfortable talking to a woman I don't know is if I am in company so I feel safe.
